When US President Joe Biden was campaigning, he made many promises to change the immigration laws that Trump had firmly established. This issue was a significant component of his campaign and ultimate victory in the presidential election. Since Biden became President, he has taken measures to reunite migrant children with their families with the help of a task force.

In April, Biden declared a national plan that would only allow 15,000 migrants into the US in 2021. After immense criticism by the public, Biden increased the number of migrants to 62,500. Biden also said the border wall which was planned by Trump’s administration would not be built. His migration policies reflect more liberal views shared by younger generations of Americans.

Although Biden’s administration has made many reformations in the country’s immigration policies, illegal migration remains an unsolved issue. When Biden entered the White House, he warned migrant caravans not to make the perilous journey through Mexico into the United States as migration laws were not going to be changed dramatically in a short time.

Presently, there are more illegal migrants entering the U.S. than at any point in the previous three years. There is a surge of people (including young children) travelling into the US through Mexico. Each year, thousands of migrants from ‘caravans’ and travel to the US on foot. This year, the number of migrants attempting to enter the U.S. is astounding and will easily surpass the figures shown in previous years.

In January, approximately 7,000 migrants from Honduras were intercepted by security forces in Guatemala.
In February, the number of immigrants, mostly families with young children, caught by U.S. authorities, while attempting to enter the U.S. through the southern border tripled to almost 19,000.

Many of the migrants, who were interviewed by reporters while making their way through Mexico, mistakenly believe that Biden has made drastic changes to immigration policies and will allow them to remain in the U.S. A smuggler confessed to Reuters that he heard there was the free passage into the U.S. for the first 100 days of Biden’s administration.

Similar rumours have been circulating with the help of private groups on Facebook. Although immigration policies remain tough on illegal immigrants, there have been migrant families who were able to stay in the U.S. legally.

In April, Biden’s administration began to oppose the wave of illegal immigrants entering the country. The State Department has released 28,000 ads in Spanish, Portuguese, and Indigenous languages on 133 stations across central and south America. The ads were designed to discourage immigrants from embarking on the journey to the U.S.

Due to the outbreak of Covid-19 cases, Biden left a few of Trump’s emergency policies in place. One such policy allows U.S. authorities to expel every illegal immigrant entering the U.S. through the southern border. There are cases of civil rights groups suing Biden’s administration to have the U.S. asylum system continue working on migrant cases.

Biden’s effectiveness in dealing with the mass migration issue is yet to be seen. So far, he has taken a strong stance against illegal migration with more diplomatic flare than his predecessor would have expressed.

The COVID-19 crisis in India continues to overwhelm the country’s hospitals. The Shanti Mukand Hospital in Delhi was forced to display a sign at their entrance gate warning passersby that new patients will not be allowed into the premises due to lack of oxygen. This has become a familiar sight for families of COVID-19 patients. Several hospitals in Delhi are running out of much-needed oxygen.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal pleaded with the government, through a tweet, to provide hospitals with oxygen as some hospitals only had a few hours of oxygen left. An oxygen tanker was sent to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital after the hospital staff said that 60 patients were on the verge of death.

At another hospital in Delhi, 20 patients died of Covid-19 due to a lack of oxygen. Dr DK Baluja, medical director at the Jaipur Golden Hospital, said that the supplies and oxygen his hospital had were exhausted. India’s medical system is struggling to handle the wave of COVID-19 cases across the country.

The increase in Covid-19 cases has not slowed down. This week, India reported a world record increase in Covid-19 cases for the third day in a row. Hospitals that are running low on oxygen often have to wait hours for a new supply.

In many cases, patients die before new supplies of oxygen arrive, despite the government’s efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19. In Delhi, there is limited space available for cremations. Officials have been asked to find space for cremations. Crematoriums are overwhelmed with the number of dead bodies they are receiving daily.

Families of Covid-19 victims, living in Delhi, are furious with their government’s response. In early March, Indian scientists warned government officials that the Covid-19 variant in the country was more contagious than other variants.

Unfortunately, India’s government did not take this advice seriously. Not many precautions were taken to restrict movement in communities. The Federal Government did not design an effective strategy to deal with the worst consequences of the virus. Recently, a fire broke out at a Covid-19 hospital and killed 18 patients.

The total number of infections in India has surpassed 18 million. All over Delhi, hospital beds are in short supply. Pictures have emerged of relatives who wait outside hospital grounds with severely affected Covid-19 patients sitting in chairs and lying on benches.

Susan Kress, executive director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, says the messaging and communication reported by India’s government is not clear. There is a lot of speculation among people living in New Delhi about the guidelines.

India is now the worst-hit country in the world. However, experts say this is not a crisis that will remain in India. The whole world is at risk. “The virus doesn’t respect borders, or nationalities, or age, or sex or religion,” says Dr Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist at the World Health Organization. A recent flight from Delhi to Hong Kong alarmed authorities after 50 passengers tested positive for the virus.

The government is planning to vaccinate 250 million people by July. Serum Institute of India (SII) is the world’s biggest vaccine maker. The government is relying on SII to manufacture the vaccines required to reach its target in July.

Many organizational issues are surrounding the vaccination process. Millions of Indians were signing up for the vaccine at the same time which resulted in the vaccine portal crashing. Some experts said that the government should have begun the vaccination process by targeting people over the age of 45. At present, everyone over the age of 18 is eligible to be vaccinated.

The situation is so dire and so many young people have died or are critically ill. The next few days will determine if the government can grasp control and coordinate oxygen and restrict the flow of its citizens in New Delhi. No preparations were enough for the scale of this outbreak. The medical system across India is buckling under pressure. New Delhi residents feel helpless and angry. They can only wait and wear masks, practice social distancing and hope for the best.

Bernie Madoff, mastermind of the world’s largest fraud, died at the age of 82 on April 14. He is survived by his wife Ruth and their grandchildren. Madoff’s death sparked international news due to the nature and extent of his financial crimes. Bernie Madoff was once a financial elite in New York.

He was regarded as one of the world’s best investors. For decades, he swindled money from family and friends. No one was safe from his Ponzi scheme. His clients believed that Berne Madoff was investing their funds into the stock market. In reality, their money was being funnelled into Madoff’s bank account at JP Morgan.

Madoff’s crimes affected rich, middle-class and working-class families. Thousands of investors, without knowledge of how stock markets operate, were conned into giving their life savings over to Bernie Madoff. By all accounts, he lied to people with ease. Although, it was noted, by CNBC special correspondent Mark Cohn, that Bernie Madoff was not charismatic or particularly outgoing.

He appealed to his investors because he never promised too much. Madoff did not give his clients exceedingly high expectations. He promised high returns that were reasonable enough for people to believe.

Madoff used money given to him by new clients to pay off his old clients. He said their returns were very promising in the stock market. By all accounts, Madoff never showed sympathy for his crimes. He bought extravagant mansions and penthouse apartments across the United States. His family enjoyed lavish vacations at the expense of his investors. The Madoff family was famous for their wealth and luxury during the height of the Ponzi scheme.

Madoff’s victims were not the only ones who suffered as a result of his actions. In 2010, two years after Madoff’s fraud was discovered, Mark Madoff, Bernie’s eldest son, committed suicide in his New York apartment. His wife, Stephanie Madoff, believes that the weight of his father’s crimes weighed heavily on his conscience. In 2014, Andrew Madoff, Bernie’s only remaining offspring, died after a long and arduous battle with cancer. Andrew admitted his father’s crimes affected his health.

Many years before Madoff admitted his crimes, Harry Markopolos blew the whistle on the massive fraudulent scheme. Markopolos is a financial fraud investigator and forensic accountant who investigated Madoff’s unregistered hedge fund. In the late 1990s, Markopolos worked at a Boston investment firm. His boss told him about Madoff’s financial investments and how successful they were.

Markopolos was asked by his boss to find out how Madoff was accomplishing colossal returns so their firm could copy him. In 2000, Markopolos took his findings to the Boston office of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He presented evidence that Madoff was a fraud. Almost nothing was done about it. By 2008, Markopolos had submitted evidence to the SEC multiple times. He claims SEC staff did not thoroughly investigate his claims.

The biggest financial firms in the world did not invest in Bernie Madoff. Markopolos says this is because hundreds of people who worked in finance suspected or knew that Madoff’s dealings wire fraud. People who understood how stock markets worked did not go near Madoff’s hedge fund.

Mark and Andrew Madoff never made peace with their father. They told their mother, Ruth, not to visit Bernie Madoff if she wanted to have a relationship with her grandchildren. When they were children, Mark and Andrew, looked up to their father. He was already a well-known investor on Wall Street.

In 2008, when the financial crisis began, Bernie Madoff confessed to his family that his entire career as an investor had been a lie. He revealed his Ponzi scheme and asked them to give him a week to arrange his affairs. Almost immediately, Mark Madoff contacted his father-in-law, a well-known litigator, so that they could turn Bernie Madoff in.

In November 2020, Aung San Suu Kyi, a greatly beloved political figure in Myanmar, led the National League for Democracy (NLD) to an astounding landslide victory in Myanmar’s national election. Nationwide celebrations ensued as the NLD invited minority parties to cooperate and work alongside it. However, the widespread optimism for the future was short-lived.

The opposition party, backed by Myanmar’s powerful military, claimed the election results were fraudulent. The election commission and international observers were quick to indicate there was no evidence of widespread fraud in the electoral process. Before a new session for Parliament could begin, the military instigated a swift coup. Aung Suu Kyi and many of her party members were detained. A few NLD members managed to escape and formed a new political alliance in an unknown location.

Military commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing is now in control of Myanmar’s government. The military has declared a state of emergency that will last for a year. The international community has condemned the military and the coup. Heavy sanctions have been placed on Myanmar’s new leaders. Ms Suu Kyi’s whereabouts are unknown. She has been charged with several crimes including violation of Myanmar’s official secrets act and keeping illegal walkie-talkies.

Myanmar’s citizens have had to endure arbitrary arrests, internet blackouts and violence at the hands of the nation’s military. Several police officers who fled their duties claim that orders were given for them to kill protestors. The military government is struggling to control nationwide protests.

Facebook videos documented police firing tear gas and stun grenades into crowds of protestors in Lashio, a town located in the nation’s northern Shan region. Witnesses claim police opened fire to break up protestors in the town of Bagan. News of the nationwide protests has spread across social media platforms nationally and internationally.

For several days after the military’s overthrow of the NLD, peaceful protestors assembled in Yangon, the nation’s largest city, to demonstrate their fury and frustration with the military. Tens of thousands of protestors began to flood the streets in protest. Security forces became increasingly tense as protestors also gathered in towns across the nation.

Overnight raids were conducted by security forces across Yangon. March 21 was the bloodiest day since the beginning of the crisis. Approximately 100 people were killed when the military opened fire on protestors. International observers estimate that 400 people have died since the conflict started in February.

The conflict in Myanmar is getting worse with each passing day. The military has escalated the violence by conducting airstrikes against Myanmar’s largest rebel group. As hundreds of funerals were being held across the country, the military’s leaders allegedly threw a lavish party to mark their successful overthrow of the democratically elected government. Thomas Vajda, the United States Ambassador to Myanmar, claimed the military was murdering unarmed civilians including children.

Amnesty International has pleaded with the international community to respond with greater force. Their requests include a UN arms embargo and sanctions on the top generals. Russia and China, two complicit actors in the crisis, have veto powers at the United Nations Security Council.

It is unlikely that quick action will be taken against Myanmar’s military when these two powerful nations have a say so. Ming Yu Hah, Amnesty International’s deputy regional director for campaigns said, “This is just the latest example of the military authorities’ determination to kill their way out of nationwide resistance to the coup.”

Recently, a video of a nun kneeling in front of armed forces was released to the BBC. She was asking for mercy on behalf of protestors who were hiding in the clinic where she worked. Her inspiring actions have gone viral in the country. Although the military has continued its reign of violence, Myanmar’s people have taken a determined stand in favour of democracy. The next few weeks will reveal whether the nation will take steps towards a civil war.
