Travel and sustainability

by Miriam Ferraglioni

How it is complicated nowadays to take into account all the different activities we can or cannot do when travelling…The problem of sustainability makes its way into our minds and our daily life. When we were kids, we just popped by the beach and collected colourful shells, light sand, little stones, small crabs and fishes, without knowing that we were altering the environment. We are not doing that much, just picking up few souvenirs, isn’t it?

But the fact that I can do whatever I want as you do concerns that small pieces taken by many people entail a huge change in the environment. That is the reason why in Italy there is a new norm forbidding the collection of “small traces of nature” to keep the best and most natural environment safe.

In addition, when travelling there are many other factors to take into account. As such, the transport used, the location, the hotel and so on. Here, few tips to help you be more sustainable as possible without stress.

Firstly, the transport. We all know that plane is the most polluting way of mode. This is due to the high CO2 emissions. When looking at Google Flight to search for your next flight, you should check the emissions your plane will produce during the trip. However, it is better to avoid it or at least for a short distance, and prefer transports like train or hitchhiking, to reduce the emissions.

Secondly, when visiting a city or whatever you want to visit, it is better to have a beautiful walk which is healthier and it doesn’t entail any emission or to take public transports, that, of course, are cheaper than a Uber.

Thirdly, as usual, try to avoid eating meat and prefer biological restaurants for instance. As we saw, it is no so easy in this case because if you want to taste traditional food, usually it involves eating animals.

In addition, you could use your package for everything, especially a water bottle in steel, that reduces the consumption of plastic and, surely, it is cheaper, and your cutlery.

Lastly, you can have a look at such websites as ecobnb.com, where you can find many accommodations with a low footprint.

In the end, these are just small tips that can be followed step-by-step, introducing one per every new journey. It is just a matter of getting used to it.
