How to be a successful lawyer?
Behind every successful law firm, there are valuable attorneys. Being a lawyer can be a very rewarding job, both financially and personally. However, this depends on your ability as an attorney. So let’s understand what is necessary to be a successful lawyer? What differentiates a “lawyer” and a “successful lawyer“? Law school teaches you some of the necessary skills, but they cannot teach you how to truly act in court.
Being a lawyer is a job full of responsibilities. They need to keep the client’s interest at heart and try to always find the best deal or solutions. Undoubtedly, it is of tremendous importance to protect the client’s right and fight for them.
As in every job, there are few essential “keys” that might help you achieve your goal to be a successful attorney and here they are.

First of all, having excellent communication skills. It is indeed one of the most important skills needed to become an extraordinary attorney. Lawyers need excellent verbal and written potential. Attorneys must be able to write concisely and persuasively, as they write several documents.
Secondly, being able to explain yourself under pressure. Lawyers spend most of their time in the courtroom and have to argue convincingly, therefore, it is of vital importance they do not panic and they can express themselves clearly under every circumstance. Attorneys need as well to be persuasive, as the more persuasive he or she is the more possibilities there are to win the case.
Another very important skill is to be persistent. A lawyer has to remember to never give up. Perseverance will help him going forward and hopefully win the case for the client. Lawyers do not only have to talk with the clients and convince them they have good potential another important process is the listening part. An attorney needs to listen to the client to properly apprehend the case. If the attorney will not be very focused whilst listening, he will lose pertinent information.

To build the best case possible, it is necessary to fully understand the facts of it. Another important skill that not every lawyer has is responsiveness. When working on a case, the lawyer should respond rapidly to all the people involved in the case. Not being easily available might create problems for the development of the defence, and therefore, the results would not be as good as they could.
How to improve the skills?
To improve the previous skills, years of experience are necessary. Obviously, for some lawyers it will be easier to improve them whilst for others can be extremely hard. However, some of the skills can be improved by practising. For instance, to improve the writing skills it might be a good idea to practice your writing as much as possible.
A good way to do that might be to write on a blog or follow some writing course. Besides, if scared or unconfident of speaking in a courtroom, you could get involved in activities that require speaking in front of other people; such as theatre or debating. A skill that might help to differentiate a normal attorney from a very successful one might be persuasiveness.

Being a lawyer it is necessary to convince people that the story you are telling is the truth. Thus, being a very persuasive person maybe something very helpful. Unfortunately, it is not a very easy skill to improve, however, exercising and repeating the facts of the case several times might lead them on the right path.
To sum up, I believe that every good lawyer should have the above-stated skills and try to improve them as much as they can. As I stated above, the best way for a lawyer to achieve his/her goals is to never give up and always try their best.
