Donald Trump had announced that he would reject the $900 billion relief package, which had been passed by Congress last Monday if checks were not tripled from $600 to $2,000. The current bill has stated that there will be up to $900 billion in economic aid, alongside $600 checks for a majority of people in need and $300 a week cheque as unemployment benefits.
In a recent tweet, he had posted in the form of a video that the process to pass the bill had “taken forever”. He was also not afraid to voice his opinions as he called the relief package terms “a disgrace”. However, House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi responded to the President that the Republicans do not agree with the desired amount from Mr Trump. To which she also said “Democrats are ready to bring this to the Floor this week by unanimous consent. Let’s do it!” Trump had also mentioned that it would be up to the next administration (Biden and Harris) in January 2021 to deliver the relief package if he is unable to present a suitable bill.
As an outcome of Trump’s shocking statement, the implications for the next step have become very serious, in which if Trump were not to sign the bill, the government is forced to shut down as of December 29th. Resulting in the 900-billion-dollar Covid stimulus relief package plan to be eliminated and the competition for the two final senate seats in Georgia will begin.
With the potential overturning of the recent presidential election results, it had been highlighted by Trump’s aides that he had been significantly distracted. Therefore, not paying enough attention to more relevant and important matters such as the upcoming negotiation of the relief bill. The neglect had required administration officials to negotiate the bill without the presence of Trump, in which they were stunned at the news when President Donald Trump and his economic team had publicly magnified the bill.
Rapidly spreading across the US, the pandemic has caused the government to act fast to maintain the economic stand of the country and its citizens. By doing so earlier on in the year, Congress had passed a spending bill of 2.2 trillion dollars which would go towards unemployment aid, stimulus checks, small businesses and other factors of society. But as a result of the new presidential elections and the recent spikes in the pandemic, a new bill had been established.
Supposedly the new bill is set to create hope and critical economic relief for American workers, families and businesses. As mentioned in the video there will be anticipations of financial aid to the Kennedy Centre, foreign aid agreements and fish management language.
On the other hand, there have been many disagreements from others in the government who feel that Trump is being irresponsible but not much is being said so far as criticisms are being held close to the chest.
The bill has been passed by House and Senate with the possibility to override the veto if Trump were to put a halt to the new measures put in place. It is currently in a waiting position as to whether Trump would veto it, but there are no certain implications as to whether he will sign into the new law either.
